Herbert F. Kuhlman, 81, of Canyon died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with Mike Kuhlman and the Rev. Scott Greer officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Canyon.
Mr. Kuhlman was born in 1922 on the same spread in Randall County where he still lived. He married Jeannie Steinke in Amarillo on June 5, 1946.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving his country during World War II.
For all of his 81 years, he was a true cowboy in spirit and deed, and in 2001, the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Fair honored him as Cowboy of the Year. He attributed his success to his family, the Panhandle land and his God. His credo was, "You work the land, you work close to God, and you work hard!" He was a member of Paramount Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Jean Kuhlman in 1951, and a grandson, C.M. Kuhlman in 1996.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cindy Ortiz and husband, Phil, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Mike Kuhlman and wife, Donna, and Gary Kuhlman and wife, Debbie, all of Canyon; two brothers, Alvin Kuhlman and wife, Lisa, of Canyon and Jim Kuhlman and wife, Ann, of Mason City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nicci Howard and husband, Matt, of San Antonio, Amy Ortiz of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ashlee Kuhlman of Canyon; three stepgrandchildren, Brandi Miller and husband, Jesse, of Chambersburg, Va., Justin Reed of Amarillo and David Ortiz and wife, Fabiola, of Alexandria, Va.; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Tyler Warner of Chambersburg, Va.Herbert F. Herbert F. Kuhlman, 81, of Canyon died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.

Mr. Kuhlman was born in 1922 on the same spread in Randall County where he still lived. He married Jeannie Steinke in Amarillo on June 5, 1946.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving his country during World War II. He had always been involved in agriculture and remained active in the industry with his sons, Mike and Gary. He was also part owner of Dawn Custom Cattle Feeders and was a stockholder and director of the First State Bank of Happy, Canyon.

Over the years, he was honored with the Randall County Top Hand Award, Randall County Outstanding Result Demonstrator and Randall County Outstanding Conservationist. He was a member of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and was a 35-year director of the Consumers Fuel Cooperative.

He belonged to countless other professional associations that promote the agriculture industry. He always believed in helping our youth get their start in agriculture and served as a youth organization supporter for 4-H and FFA programs and as a dedicated volunteer for the Tri-State High School Rodeo Association.

He was also instrumental in working with Dr. Charles Smallwood to acquire Nance Ranch for West Texas A&M University. Never one to shy away from hard work and hard times, he volunteered his labor, equipment and materials to make the Nance Ranch an incredible asset to WTAMU. He mentored the university's agriculture students, hired many of them for his own operation and launched their successful careers to assure trhe industry thrives in the next generation.

Very few Tri-State residents embody the Western lifestyle with the integrity and immense accomplishments of Mr. Kuhlman. For all of his 81 years, he was a true cowboy in spirit and deed, and in 2001, the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Fair honored him as Cowboy of the Year. He attributed his success to his family, the Panhandle land and his God. His credo was, "You work the land, you work close to God, and you work hard!" He was a member of Paramount Christian Church.
