Billy Porter Mitchell, 72, went to receive his Heavenly reward June 18, 2001.He was a member of Central Heights United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II, a member of Central Heights Civitan Club and a graduate of Central High School and the University of North Alabama.He was the son of the late Marvin Mitchell and Opal Young Mitchell.Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Aycock Mitchell; a daughter, Susan Schmidlkofer and husband, Michael; a son, Bill and wife, Susan, all of Florence, Ala.; and a sister, Jeanette Gibbs, Wetumpka, Ala.Also, he is survived by three grandchildren (to whom he was their B.B.), Mary Martin, Porter and Elli; three nephews; one niece; several cousins; and a host of friends.Billy served his community as the first president of the Central Civitan Club, the Central High School Band Boosters and the PTA. He was the "voice" of the Central Wildcats for 25 years, and was a Boy Scout leader, was on the Lauderdale County Water Board for 18 years, serving as chairman for five years.Billy loved his church, serving as treasurer for 43 years, was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. He was a faithful member serving as delegate to the North Alabama conference for many years.He served as financial aid director for UNA, innumerable students remember his kindness and help. He was a member of the UNA Sportsmens Club and supported the Lions wholeheartedly and with pride.Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Central Heights United Methodist Church, with burial in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. He will be placed in the church one hour before the service.Officiating at the service will be current pastor, Dr. Robert Perry, and former pastors, the Revs. Hal Noble and Alex Oberneder.A more patient man could the world ever find.He put the capital letters to the word kind.Pallbearers will be Ralph Thompson, Charles Rhodes, Larry Young, Gene Mitchell, Bobby McCormick, Royce Mitchell and Carl Ferrill.Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Fort, Talmadge Graben and Jerry Warrington.Memorials may be made to Central Heights United Methodist Church.Greenview Funeral Home of Florence is directing.
