Aged Lady Succumbs

Mrs. Barney Goeckner Sr. Died Saturday Night

Funeral Tuesday morning from Bishop Catholic Church

Mrs. Barney Goeckner passed peacefully to a better beyond due to paralysis, last Saturday night at 10 or 11 o'clock, July 1, 1922 at her home in Franklin. Funeral services were held in St. Aloys Catholic Church at Bishop, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, after which the remains of the venerable aged mother, grandmother and great grandmother were tenderly laid to rest by loving hands in the local cemetery. Rev. Ephrem Muench OFM, temporary pastor, officiated. A large concourse of relatives, neighbors and members of the Mother's Sodality and Third Order of which the deceased was a faithful member, attended the obsequies.

Miss Theresia Sandschaefer was born at Coesfeld, Westphalia, Prussia, 1843, and came with her parents to this country when four years of age. The voyage across the Atlantic, on a sail ship, lasted ten or twelve weeks, with rolling high seas and many discommodities, they endured. Finally they landed at New Orleans, steamboated to St Louis, went overland to Effingham and settled near Bishop in Watson Township. Deceased attended church and school at Teutopolis. When grown to womanhood, she was married to Barney Goeckner, 58 years ago. To this union were born twelve children. The oldest child, a girl, died in infancy and Mary, Mrs. Wm Lux of Effingham, died July 10,1920. The living are Henry, Ben Jr., Frank of Keuterville, Idaho, Tony, John living on the homestead, Anna, a domestic with the Sisters of the Precious Blood at Ruma, IL, Joe, Willie (Therese) Mrs. Henry Bierman all of Franklin. Mrs. Goeckner is survived by her aged husband, 10 children, many grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Anton Repking of Bishop, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frank Esker of Dieterich and Mrs. Henry Sandschaefer of Watson, near Bishop.

In the death of Mrs. Goeckner, one of the good old mothers, passed from our midst, one who experienced and endured all of the hardships and inconveniences of pioneer life, one who had the solicitude and welfare of a large family at heart and one who was ever ready to help a neighbor or relative with kind words and works of mercy. Deceased was a lifelong and loyal member of St. Aloy's Parish at Bishop. Grandmother Goeckner will be greatly missed by all of her dear ones. Had Mrs. Goeckner lived two years longer, she could have celebrate her diamond wedding. Eight years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Goeckner celebrated their golden wedding.

The following persons from afar were present at the funeral: Anna Goeckner of Ruma, IL, William Laux and children and Mr. and Mrs. John Having of Effingham, John Probst of Island Grove, Joe Westendorf and wife of near Wheeler, S L James of Effingham, Albert Barcum and companions of Dieterich, Tony Esker, wife and son Lawrence of Teutopolis, and Professor C H Woermann of Teutopolis and J C Kelley of Effingham.
