During his high school years in Shidler, Okla., he met his life mate, Syble Mae Jennings. They married on December 5, 1943, just before he left to serve in Europe in World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, WWII Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Service Stars.
After the war, he finished college at Oklahoma A&M, graduating in 1948 with a degree in industrial engineering. He immediately went to work for Carter Oil Company and began a lifelong career in the oil patch. At this, by all accounts, he truly excelled. Syble and he moved several times, making lasting friendships around the country. In 1959 they found their way to Montana, which they fell in love with and forever after considered home. Company changes necessitated a temporary move to Wichita, where Reg enjoyed a stint as an executive vice president. In 1986 he semi-retired, moved back to Billings, and founded a successful independent oil and gas investment company.
With their two kids, Joe, born in 1950, and Terri, born in 1953, Reg and Syble enjoyed many years of love, adventure and good fun. Outdoor activities like camping, fishing, and hunting with family and friends produced priceless memories. Reg and Syble traveled extensively in recent years. Reg was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed fleecing the unwary in his favorite card game, gin rummy.
All who knew Reg recognized his exceptional character. His integrity was unquestionable. He had a consistently positive approach to life and a genuine interest in others. He believed that everyone deserved an even break and many times went out of his way to see that young people got one.
Reg died peace fully in his home in Billings on March 3, 1999, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Syble Jennings Orr, son Joe, daughter-in-law Kim and grandson Justin Davis of Kalispell; daughter, Terri, son-in-law, Pat, and grandson Jess of Alaska; mother, Gladys of Neosho, Mo., sister Mary and brother-in-law Herman McCollough of Arkansas; brother, Jim and sister-in-law, Barbara of Denver; sister-in-law Mary Lou of Arizona; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Billie Jennings of Tulsa; and many nieces and nephews. Reg was preceded in death by his father Clay and brother, Charles.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 9, at 1 p.m. The family encourages all who would like to share a story to speak at the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Big Sky Hospice to whom the family will be forever grateful.
