John Henry Murray was one of seven children born to Luke and Ann Murray. John was born in Millerton, New York on September 12, 1853. John brothers were James Bernard and Frank Luke. He had four sisters, Mary, Teresa, Margaret, and Elizabeth. John was about fourteen when his family moved to Rhode Island in 1867.

John Henry was a well known resident of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He grew up on Greene Street and later purchased his own home and raised his family on Greene street as well. John Married Mary Frances Kelly in 1881 and they had four children: Mary Theresa, John Henry Jr., Bernard Francis, and Edward J. Murray.

John Henry seems to have wored alot. He was a marble cutter and owned his own shop. He crafted his parents headstone as well as many other headstones that can be found in cemeteries around East Greenwich, Rhode Island. In addition to his work as a marble cutter, John was an officer in the Kent County Superior Court for 38 years. John retired only one year before his death in 1936. For nine years before his retirement he served as deputy sheriff and his son, Edward J. Murray succeeded hin as deputy sheriff and court crier.

In the Town of East Greenwich John served as Town Sergeant and 15 years as Chief of Police up until 1924 when the Good Government Movement ended in a change of Town Government. He also served as health officer, truant officer and sealer of weights and measures. He was first appointed a court officer by Sheriff A. Sprafgue in 1897. He was reappointed by Sheriff Michael H. Lynch and was made a deputy sheriff by Sheriff Theodore S. Andrews.

John was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church. His furneral services wer held at Our Lady of Mercy and he was buried in Saint Patrick's Cemetery in East Greenwich. The services were attended by a number of state and town officials.
