Aili Esther Tuomala, 84, a longtime resident of Ely, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born November 19, 1918, in Ely, the daughter of Victor and Hendriika (Koski) Maki.

A 1937 graduate of Ely Memorial High School and attended Ely Junior College. She married George W Tuomala on June 12, 1957, in Ely and was a homemaker. During World War II, Aili worked in the shipyards in San Francisco, and lived in Duluth briefly, prior to returning to Ely. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, a Senior Regent in the Women of the Moose, a member of the Ladies of Kaleva, the American Legion Auxiliary #248, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Vermilion Rebekkah Lodge #8.

Survivors include her husband, George; children: Ronald (Beth) Nirva, Diane (Dave) Kromer, David Hernesmaa and Daniel Hernesmaa, and Cindy (Mark) Dieter; grandchildren, Michael Nirva, Eric Nirva, Chris (Angie) Weisinger, Jeff (Jenny Reschke) Kromer, Amy (Joe) Sailer, Adam (Carrie) Nirva, Nichole (Jeremy) Moore, Bryan Weisinger and Monique (Dennis Burkes) Weisinger; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, John Nirva and William Hernesmaa; and brothers, Arvo and Arnie Maki.

Interment in the Ely Cemetery.
