RHINELANDER DAILY NEWS, Tuesday, August 13, 1963 : Matt Stevens, 81, Pelican Resident, Dies Early Today
Matthew S. (Matt) Stevens, 81, Rte. 4, died at 4:45 a.m. today in St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness.
Born May 25, 1882, in Unity, he grew up in that community and was engaged in farming and logging. He was employed as a highway inspector by the State Highway Department from June, 1921, until 1954, when he retired. He had resided in the town of Pelican since retirement.
He was married to Mrs. Hattie Dinger July 16, 1929, in Racine.
He formerly served as assessor in the town of Pelican and was a member of the Zion Ev. Lutheran Church and the Pelican Grange.
Surviving are his wife Hattie; four sons, Vernon of Ladysmith, Frank of Gordon Grove, Calif., Clifford of Gilroy, Calif., and Roger of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Daniels of Eugene, Ore., and Mrs. Violet O'Brien of Salem, Ore; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Walter (Ermgard) Winquist of Rhinelander; one sister, Mrs. Mamie Miller of Bruce; three brothers, Paul of Hustisford, Lawrence of California and Gib of LaFarge; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude; one brother, John, and a stepson, Werner Dinger.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wilbert Gawrisch officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. The body will be in the Carlson Funeral Home Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday until noon.
