He married Rita C. Freck on October 12, 1940 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Frederick (Regina C. Proefrock) Freck of 823 Nash Road, North Tonawanda; the Rev. Carl A. Frankenstein officiated.

Prior to entering the military, Mr. Ziehm was employed at the Bell Aircraft company in Wheatfield, New York, and at the Linde Corporation in the Town of Tonawanda, New York. Later, Mr. Ziehm had served as a volunteer fireman at Gratwick Hose in North Tonawanda.

A Private First Class during World War II, Mr. Ziehm was later promoted to Sergeant.
