George was the only son of James and Isabella . He went to work in the mines with his father when he was so small his father carried him on his shoulders. Sunday was the only day he saw sunshine. From 1847 to 1851 , he worked with his father in the Wallace Pottery factory at Newberry . In 1851 he started work in a printing office. In 1852 he attended school for eight months and then went back to work at the printing office. In 1855 he attended another school where he learned reading, writing and arithmetic. He became an expert accountant and penman. By 1856 , he was an apprentice for six years as a bookbinder. During this time, he heard about Mormonism and was baptized in 1856 . He was made clerk of the branch, where he served for seven years. After completing his apprenticeship, he continued working there until he left for America in 1863 . He had married the same year and, after visiting their friends and relatives, they left for America . They left Florence, Nebraska , in August , paying their way by George driving the oxen. They stored their food in the wagon and George carried the bedding on his back. They sold all their clothes except what was absolutely needed, to get food. Upon their arrival in Salt Lake , they lived in separate homes that winter until George was able to obtain work and afford a place to live. They went to Ogden in the spring where he farmed, cut and hauled logs, and anything he could get to do. He worked on the construction of the railroad and was paymaster for a time. Later he became the baggage master and later, was made Depot Master, a position he held until his death in 1904 . He remained faithful to the church all his life.
