John signed a WWI draft registration card June 5, 1917 at Hastings, Nebraska giving his date of birth as January 9, 1893. Born at Hastings. Description: age 24, single, medium height, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair. He was single, working as a carpenter, living 501 Chicago in Hastings. Signed: John Zeiler.

John served in WWI with the 89th Division from April 30, 1918 to June 2, 1919.

He and Emma were married on August 2, 1919 in Hastings, Nebraska. Later that year, they moved to Holyoke where John joined the carpenter business with his brother, George. They built John's and Emma's home at 718 E. Furry Street where they lived for 58 years.

Their children were Kenneth, John, Marvin, Norma, and Zelda. Kenneth died as a child. John died December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor serving on the Arizona.

John and Emma and their children were members of the Holyoke United Methodist Church. He continued working as a carpenter and also worked as a plumber. He was in business in the ice plant, Conoco Service Station, and retired from the Zeiler Equity Creamery.

John was a charter member and Past Commander of the American Legion, a charter member of the V.F.W., member of the Sterling Elks Lodge, and member of the Holyoke Fire Department. Emma was a charter member of both the American Legion Auxiliary and V.F.W Auxiliary.

John passed away February 6, 1979 and Emma passed away February 15, 1978. Both are buried at Holyoke Memorial Park.
