Frank Ivan Gilpin, of Curtin, OR. who Jan. 6, 2004 of heart disease. Gilpin was born Feb. 11, 1933, in St. Louis, Mo., to Frank and Virginia Hoelzer Gilpin. He married Ruth in Vista, CA, on Dec. 31, 1987. He attended high school in Seattle and later earned a degree from Syracuse University. He joined the Navy in 1952 and became a fighter pilot. He received numerous commendations during his 23 years in the Navy. He served in Korea and completed three tours of duty in Vietnam, where he was a prisoner of war for one day before he escaped. He worked as a college professor, a broadcast journalist, a writer and as a stunt man in the movie industry. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many leadership positions, and he was active in the National Rifle Association, teaching hunting safety and handgun training. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and classical guitar. He also enjoyed fishing, shrimping, sailing and shooting. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Constance Gilpin of OK. and Debra Diaz of Chula Vista, CA; a son, Frank Gilpin III of Southern California
