He was the son of Robert Christian Sanders (1798 - 1851), and his wife, Mary.
He served in as a private in the Confederate States of America, during the Civil War, for eight months. After the close of the war, he lived in the "Cobham Park Neck" section of Richmond County, Virginia, where he was a fisherman and a farmer.
Robert C. Sanders was one of the Founders of the Cobham Park Baptist Church in 1885, and one of the first Trustees.
SANDERS - Mr. Robert C. Sanders, aged 68 years, of Cobham Park Neck, near Warsaw, died 3 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon last. Mr. Sanders attended Sunday School at Cobham Park church on Sunday morning. He returned home about noon, and after greeting his wife and little daughter an while unhitching his horse, fell unconscious in the yard where he was found a few minutes later by his wife. Medical aid was at once summoned, but he never regained consciousness. Mr.Sanders was one of our most exemplary citizens, and was held in the highest esteem by a large circle of admiring friends. As a husband, father and neighbor he measured up to all that was the highest and best. He left a rich heritage to his children in a well spent life. A good man has gone from our midst.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastoe, Rev. George M. Connelly, and interment was made at his late home. The pallbearers were Dr. H. L. Segar, Messrs. L. S. Jeffries, J.B. Rains, G. Milton Sydnor, I.J. Packett and Jerome Delano. Mr. Sanders is survived by an aged mother, Mary Jenkins.
