Married Edward Brewer Byrd, February 1952.

Irma Byrd was born Nov. 25, 1927 in Vienna, Austria; daughter of Josef and Josefine Hochmeister Jansky, and sister of Josef Jansky.

Growing up in Wolkersdorf, Austria during World War II, Irma came to the U.S. in 1950 as an au pair for a U.S. military family. Here she met Edward B. Byrd of Dawsonville, MD. They married in February of 1952 and Irma became a U.S. citizen in 1957. The Byrds were married for 58 years until Ed's death in November 2010.

Irma was many things to many people and became widely known, respected and loved in her community. Through the years, people flocked to the Byrds' farm for Irma's warm hospitality, generosity and loving nature. She was a true magnet and had legions of devoted friends. While having no children of her own, Irma was a second mom and grandmother to dozens of her lucky neighbors and their children.
Irma was an active and giving member of the Darnestown Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, and contributed in countless ways to the church and her community.

Her husband Ed was a lifetime farmer in the Dawsonville-Poolesville area of Montgomery County where they raised Angus, wheat, corn and other crops on their farm. Irma worked alongside Ed in every respect and would often bottle-feed those calves born in the winter months, bringing them into the basement and giving them her own special concoction of whiskey and warm milk--which worked, she reported!

Irma's range of interests was wide--she enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, gardening, sewing (especially for the church bazaars and baby quilts for new family additions), quilting, and swimming as well as reading and current events. She was swimming and cooking up her infamous and delicious homemade rolls just a week or so before her death. During her lifetime Irma also worked as a bookkeeper for Calbiochem, a pharmaceutical company with an office in Gaithersburg during the 70s and 80s.

But her true love was Ed and the many, many loyal and wonderful friends she cultivated and cared for over the years. Hers is a place in all hearts she touched that can never be filled.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday March 18 at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church, 15120 Turkey Foot Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland, with friends being received one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow on the family farm.
