Death of Otto Kirschke, Builder

Word was received in this city Sunday of the death of Otto Kirschke, long time resident of Grand Island, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ella Kenna, at Santa Cruz, Cal., at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 9 days. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters as also one brother in Germany.

Otto Kirschke was born at Kame, East Prussia, Feb. 26, 1850. he learned the masonry trade in the old country. He served in the Franco-Prussian war and after its close, in 1872, emigrated to this country, locating at Michigan City, Ind. After ten years of work in his line at Michigan city, he homesteaded a claim near O'Neill, Neb., in 1882 and six years later came to Grand Island where he again resumed his trade. His family followed to this city two years later.

At LaPorte, Ind., he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Koch. Four sons and three daughters were born, two sons, Leo, residing in Texas, and Oscar of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Ella Kenna, of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Wm. Monohan, of Seattle, surviving. The funeral will take place from the home at Santa Cruz, the body being cremated in accordance with his wish.

Much of the work of Otto Kirschke in Grand Island will long live after him. He was one of the organizers and owners of the Grand Island brick works, traces of which are yet to be seen about two miles north of the city just west of the St. Paul road. The brick house still remains and part of the kilns at the rear. The Messrs. Louis Schmidt and Henry Schlotfeldt were associated with him in this venture. It was a loss sustained in furnishing brick to the present Koehler hotel building that gave his company a severe jolt and finally led to its dissolution. Later he was a partner, under the name of Falldorf & Kirschke, in a large contracting business, and this firm constructed the present court house, The Public Library and several of the larger business blocks.

He retired from active work in 1914, owing largely to ailing eyesight, and has since resided at Michigan City, Grand Island and California.

He was a prominent member of the Ashlar Lodge, Masonic, of this city.
