REEDSVILLE - Charles W. Lennartz, 83, a resident of Elmcroft, of Reedsville, and formerly of Lewistown, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Golden Living Center- William Penn.

Born Dec. 19, 1925, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late John E. and Mary F. (Weitzel) Lennartz. His wife, Margaret "Peggy" (Esh) Lennartz, whom he greatly missed, preceded him in death on April 19, 2005.

Surviving are: children, Kathy Spagnoletti, and husband, Jim, of Mechanicsburg, and Michael Lennartz, of Lewistown.

Also surviving are: brothers and sisters, Gertrude Arnone, of Seattle, Wash., Florence Knepp, of Baltimore, William J. Lennartz, and wife, Jean, of Chambersburg, Louise Hughes, and husband, Melvin, of Lewistown, Eva Roddy, and husband, Kenneth, of Mount Union, and Theresa Witzel, and husband, Carl, of Gilbertsville; grandchildren, Jennifer Mitchell, and husband, Mike, of Lewistown, Brian Spagnoletti, and wife, Lynanne, of New Cumberland, and Joe Spagnoletti, and wife, Kristen, of Mechanicsburg; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Frank E. and John J. Lennartz, and sisters, Mary Kauffman and Agnes Evans.

He was a 1947 graduate of Lewistown High School. After leaving school, he spent four years in the U.S. Navy, with three years in the South Pacific on a destroyer during WWII.

He retired with 40 years of service in 1988 with the Pennsylvania Railroad and also worked part-time for Noerr Motor Freight for 24 years.

He was a lifetime member of his beloved Brooklyn Hose Co. and performed many different duties over the years. He was especially fond of the "Fox" and took great interest in the old fire truck. He felt honored when the Brooklyn members presented him with the "Walk of Honor," which is a brick placed at the National Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Md.

He was also a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, Moose, American Legion in Lewistown and Milroy, the City Hook & Ladder Fire Co., Fame Fire Co. and the VFW.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and always spoke fondly of his days as a young man and the volunteer services he performed. He especially liked ringing the bells for daily Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Thoms officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park with military graveside honors by VFW Post 7011.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main. St., Lewistown, with a scripture service at 8:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or Brooklyn Hose Co., 218 S. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
