George William Simmons, 84, of Arkansas City, KS passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Newkirk City Cemetery. Chaplain Norman Reeves will officiate.
George was born October 5, 1927, to Carl S. and Leona Faye (Huffman) Simmons in Uncas, OK. He was reared and educated in Newkirk attending Newkirk public schools. George accepted the Lord as his Savior, and was baptized before enlisting in the Army-Air Force. He was later honorably discharged in 1946.
On February 1, 1946, George married Virginia Lee Bryson at the Christian Church in Winfield, KS. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary February 1, 2012. George worked for Maurer-Neur (Rodeo) in 1947, as a senior beef selector for 36 years until his retirement. He also worked for David's Electronics and Food Fair in Arkansas City. In 1986 George went to work for the Cowley County Sheriff's Department until he retired in 1993.
George was a past PTA President of Adams School, P.T.A. President of the City School Council, President of the Rodeo Key Club, past member of the Lions Club, current member of the Masons, 50 year member of the Crescent Masonic Lodge #133 A.F.& A.M., Scottish Rite, Median Shrine, and the Cowley County Shrine.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Virginia Simmons; children, Jimmie Lee Simmons and wife Debbie, Mary Jane Irvin and husband William Lee, Patricia Ann Nuss and husband Kelly Lee all of Arkansas City, KS; grandchildren, Kristan Deann Hardister of Arkansas City, KS; Jimmie Shaun Simmons and wife Charmaine of Fayetteville, NC; Heather Lynn Vickery and husband Justin of Geuda Springs, KS; Amy Lee Creed, Jeremy Dwayne Irvin and wife Crystal, Aaron James Irvin, Erica Lynn Hadorn all of Arkansas City, KS; Curtis Lee Nuss and fiancee Jennifer of Hixon, TN; Neal Wayne Nuss and wife Raven of Arkansas City, KS; thirteen great-grandchildren, sister, Ida Faye Lockwood and husband Everett of Yukon, OK; half sisters, Barbara Czaplinski of Chelsea, OK; Jeannie Parks and husband Frank of Ponca City, OK.
George was preceded in death by his parents.
