James Richard Dempsey Jr., 87, of Orangeburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Orangeburg Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Edward C. Tager and the Rev. Dewayne Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Randy Dempsey, Ronny Dempsey, Reid Dempsey, Chris Shokes, Larry Lloyd and Ron Jeffcoat.
Mr. Dempsey was born Sept. 26, 1918, a son of the late J.R. and Florrie Brickle Dempsey. He was a member of Columbia Road Church of God and a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was retired from Georgia-Pacific Corporation. He had an extensive military record, served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was involved in the Invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Central Europe. Mr. Dempsey was awarded various medals of honor including the Bronze Star, American Defense Medal and others.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Driggers Dempsey; a sister, Mrs. Adam Smoak; and two brothers, Carl A. Dempsey and Gerald A. Dempsey.
Survivors include one brother, C. Parker Dempsey of Orangeburg; sisters-in-law, Doris Dempsey of Orangeburg, Gloria Dempsey of Columbia, Margaret D. Bozard of Orangeburg and Janie Rudd of Barnwell; and one brother-in-law, Charlie H. Driggers of Simpsonville.
