January 27, 1927 - The Russell Record - Obituary
John George Herdt
John George Herdt was born March 2, 1862 at Friedenberg, Russia, where he was baptized, educated, confirmed and grew to manhood. On the third day of July 1880, he was united in marriage to Katherina Mueller. To this union were born eleven children of which two daughters and three sons preceded their father to the great beyond.
In the year of 1901 he with his family came to America where he resided continuously, excepting a short period of years at Oakley, Kansas. He enjoyed good health and prosperity. Not being of a complaining disposition, even his immediate relatives barely knew when physical pain or adversities became his lot. Though for several months prior to his departure , he had been afflicted with a disease of the kidneys and which he apparently realized was determining his stay on earth; he made very little mention of the fact but bore his cross cheerfully by trusting in his master, whom he learned to know as his Saviour and friend in his boyhood days.
At 1:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 1927, the angel of death came to call him to his heavenly home. He thus attained the age of 64 years, 10 months, and 21 days. He leaves to mourn his departure the wife, John W., of Wakeeney, Emile, Mrs. George Dietz, Mrs. A. C. Krug, Mrs. H. E. Lohman, and Mrs. Sigmond Steinert, all of Russell. All were at the funeral. Services were held at the community hall, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 2:30. John Stenzel and Henry Mai, Sr., both of Russell, gave brief but impressive sermons.
Interment was made in the German Lutheran Cemetery of Russell.
