Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Cloud, for Joseph L. Pyka, who died peacefully at home on Wednesday, surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. Friends and family may call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 30th at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud and also after 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home in St. Cloud on Monday. Royalton American Legion will pray at 6 p.m. and parish prayers will be at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Reverend Bernie Gruenes will officiate. Burial with full military honors by Royalton American Legion Post 0137 will take place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Cemetery in Opole.

Joseph was born at home to the late William and Hedwiga (Maleska) Pyka in Holdingford. He graduated from Holdingford H.S. and joined the Navy Air Corps.

During his enlistment in the service, he attended several colleges.

After WWII ended, Joseph married Irene Forner on October 13, 1945 in St. Wendel, Minnesota. They farmed for several years in Opole and Rice before buying their own farm outside of Royalton in 1961.

Joseph was a certified assessor for several townships and sold DeKalb seed corn for 41 years. He was also a rural mail carrier for 20+ years. Joseph was active in his church and community as a member of the Knights of Columbus Council, school board, Catholic War Vets, Royalton American Legion Post, Farmers Union and National Farmers Organization.

Joseph enjoyed trapping, crossword puzzles, reading the St. Cloud Times, playing cards, hunting, telling stories or jokes and the occasional trip "north" to the casino.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; son, Ronald (Diane) Pyka; daughters, Linda (Richard) Sobiech, Priscilla, Cindy (Gene) Gottwalt, Lisa (Dean) Block, Mary (Al) Dehler and Lori (Steve) Huebl; 26 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Joseph; infant grandson, Michael; and siblings, Frank, Alois, Peter, William, Martha, Sophia, Gertrude, Theresa and Frances.
