Ray Watkins, 20, son of Mr. Wes Watkins and Mrs. Katie Reed Watkins of De Witt, was killed instantly at about 1 a.m. Sunday when the 1940 model Ford sedan in which he was riding, en route to his home here from Stuttgart, crashed into a concrete culvert after a tire blew out.
Watkins was said to have been thrown about 20 feet from the car, and died from a head injury.
Two other occupants of the car, Orb Poole of De Witt and Tom Bennett of near Almyra, suffered minor injuries.
Funeral services for the Watkins youth were held at Essex Funeral Home at 2:30 Monday afternoon, the Rev. Douglas M. White of the First Baptist Church was in charge, and burial was in the De Witt cemetery.
Mr Watkins is survived also by a twin sister, Mrs. Faye Schlenker, and two other sisters, Mrs. Ray Dickson and Mrs. Edna Robertson, all of De Witt. A brother, Melvin, died several years ago.
