RUSSELL - John C. Woelk Jr., 81, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Hospice Austin´s Christopher House, Austin, Texas. He was born July 21, 1920, in rural Russell to John C. and Katherine (Meier) Woelk. He graduated from Russell High School in 1938, and attended Fort Hays State University. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1941, serving as a pilot during World War II.

He married Mary Wooster on May 29, 1943, in Hays. He graduated from Washburn University Law School, Topeka, in 1948. He returned to Russell where he practiced law until shortly before his death. He served as Russell County Attorney, Kansas state senator, chairman of the Kansas State Board of Social Welfare and was a member of the Kansas Corporation Commission and Russell USD 407 school board.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Chris, Lexington, Mo., and Bill, Wichita; two daughters, Cynthia and Sarah, both of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren. Service will be scheduled at a later date at the First Congregation Church, Russell. Memorials are suggested to the Russell Habitat for Humanity or the church.
