Robert J. McCarthy, 80, of 14755 N. Cascade Road, formerly of Bernard, Iowa, died at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Luther Manor, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fillmore, Iowa, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fillmore, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, Iowa, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.
He was born on May 1, 1931, in Bernard, son of Joseph L. and Agnes (Otting) McCarthy. He was a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School in Cascade.
Bob farmed in the rural Cascade area.
He was an experienced licensed pilot and built and flew his own airplane.
Bob was an Army veteran.
He was a member of the Cascade American Legion Post 528, a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral and a former member of Sacred Heart Parish in Fillmore.
Surviving are his sister, Betty (Robert) Trumm, of Cascade; his brother, Gerald McCarthy, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, in infancy.
