Mildred F. "Millie" Strecker, 84, formerly of Commonwealth Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, in Nopeming Nursing Home. She was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on Nov. 25, 1912, to Lewis and Gunda Fladebo.

At age 5, her family moved to Willmar, Minn., where she lived for some time until moving to Mora, Minn., where she was a 1929 Mora High School graduate. Mildred received her teacher's training in Mora, Minn., and was a teacher in a one-room school house in Brunswick, Minn.

She married Ervin L. Strecker on Aug. 29, 1936, in Mora, Minn. Mildred and her husband began their family of one son and three daughters in Isle, Minn. In 1953, they moved to Duluth, where Mildred worked for Freimuth's Department Store and was an Avon products representative. Upon their retirement in the early 1970s, Millie and her husband returned to Isle, Minn., for approximately eight years, living on Mille Lacs Lake, until the late 1970s, when they moved back to Duluth.

While the children were young, Millie's family were members of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and confirmation classes. Upon returning to Duluth, she was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

Millie was known by her family as "Mother Nature Millie" and she taught many of them her deep appreciation for the outdoors. Millie loved fishing and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin on July 10, 1995; and brothers Joe and Harold Fladebo.

Millie is survived by her son, Lee (Deveny); daughters: Pat (Alvin) Henke, Sharon (Wayne) Fechner and Kay (Bob) Dahl; sister, Lucille Miller; grandchildren: Dan Thorstad, Scott Strecker, Greg Thorstad, David Fechner, Bob Dahl Jr., Steve Strecker, Scott Strecker, Kevin Strecker, Sheryl Romano, Michelle Dunia, Kathy Jackson, Krista Hanson and Karen O'Meara; and 14 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
