Eduard Theodor was the son of Christoffer (1804-1878) and Johanna Wilhelmine Poppe, nee Schierenberg (1806-1879). In 1883 he married Annie Edwards in Calcutta, India. She was the daughter of William Henry and Hannah Edwards and was born in Bengal, India, on September 18, 1862. Eduard and his wife were married for twenty-three years. Eduard Theodor died at the age of sixty-one at his residence in Osterdeich No. 59 in Bremen, Germany. He had been living in that city for the last ten years of his life.
His burial inscription is found next to the central image of his cousin, the noted Bremen architect, Johann Georg Poppe.
