Gloria was the only child of George Lytle Griffith and Mildred Marie (Jones) Griffith. She attended Burris School through junior high then attended high school at Tudor Hall in Indianapolis. After completing high school, she attended Briarcliff College in NY. There she finished a 2-year degree in 1943. She then joined the US Marine Corps, serving as a draftsman at Quantico, VA until the war's end. While there, she met Ernest A Mussler, whom she married in the base chapel on Nov 30, 1945. Shortly after, the couple moved to Muncie to live. They had four sons and a daughter together: Son Mark died in 1987.
