Nettie L. (Rick) Carow, 90, of Perham, MN, died on January 18, 2012, at Perham Living.
Nettie was born in Perham, on April 13, 1921, the second child of George and Minnie (Hilmer) Rick. She was baptized, confirmed and married in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Perham. Nettie grew up in Gorman Township, rural Perham, where she attended Gorman Township country school through the 8th grade. After 8th grade, she remained home to assist her parents on the farm and take care of her grandmother. In 1942, during World War II, Nettie worked in Fargo, ND, at a bakery in support of the war effort. Four years later, on September 10, 1946, she was united in marriage with Arthur Carow whom she met when he worked for her father on the family farm prior to the beginning of the war.
Arthur and Nettie began farming on the North Shore of Little McDonald Lake, rural Perham. During that time, a son, James, was born. In 1950, they rented a farm, south of Perham, near St. Joseph's Church. During that period, a daughter, Joyce, was born. Joyce passed away within 4 months of birth. Then, in 1953, Nettie and Arthur purchased a farm in Gorman Township and welcomed their second son, Randall. Nettie resided on the farm until 2004 when she moved into Briarwood, in Perham, due to health concerns. In 2005, Nettie suffered a stroke and moved to Perham Living.
Remembered for her countless talents, Nettie was active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary for various activities in and around the kitchen. Nettie also served as Chaplain for the VFW Post 4020 Women's Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener, growing both vegetables and flowers as well as pickles to sell to canneries. The pantry was always full for winter with canned goods. Nettie also made lye soap for use on the farm. In addition, Nettie was an excellent seamstress and made doilies, quilts and blankets for family and friends. She loved to dance and taught her sons and granddaughters to dance and enjoyed her Tuesday Coffee Club and bowling. Her Christian faith and morals were a model of caring, respect and love for others to her family as well as the value of work, skills in taking care of oneself and kindness and Christian love to all. Nettie will be deeply missed for the hugs and kind words and love she shared with all.
Surviving Nettie are her sons, James (Mary Fritz) Carow and Randall (LuAnn Wanderi) Carow; four granddaughters, Cynthia (Brian) Scheibe, Alisyn (Edwin) Keil, Whitney Carow and Dixie Carow; two great-grandchildren, Ava Ray Carow-Keil and Karl Carow Schiebe; one sister, Ella Rehbein; three sisters-in-law, Esther Smith, Lorraine Flatau and Charlotte Carow, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Nettie in death are her parents, George and Minnie Rick; husband, Arthur Carow, in 2000; daughter, Joyce Diane; one brother, William (Violet) Rick and one sister, Dorothy Rick.
