Caroline Schumann, whose grandfather was a co-founder of IBM, was born in New Jersey on September 27, 1918 to John and Florence (Ford) Schumann. She and her husband moved to Wausau in 1956. In a 1995 interview she was quoted as saying, "I felt like I was coming home." She was the first woman to head the board of the Wausau Area Community Foundation. She served on the boards of many local groups, including the Marathon County chapter of the American Red Cross, Northcentral Technical College Foundation, Wausau Conservatory of Music and Peoples State Bank. She gave millions of dollars to causes and projects throughout the area.
The Wausau community has been immeasurably enriched by the Caroline S. Mark Foundation, due to its "voluntary assumption of responsibility" in improving the local environment for all of its fortunate inhabitants. Much of Ms. Mark's inherited wealth has been generously and quietly spread throughout this area. Her philosophy is guided by a noble principle around which she long ago built her life: "The greatest obligation of freedom is the voluntary assumption of responsibility."
Caroline Mark suffered from emphysema and was confined to a wheelchair for several years. On April 26, 2002, at age 83, she died at Community Health Care Wausau Hospital. She is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
