MACKSBURG - Died, on Jan. 8th, 1:30 A.M., at her home, Mrs. Christine Gortler. The remains were interred in the Klingler Cemetery on the 10th. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mertz. The floral offerings were numerous and lasty. Deceased was aged 49 years, 9 months, and 12 days and leaves a husband and eight children, besides a host of friends, to mourn her untimely demise.

Born Christina Margaretha, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Stromberger) Becker. She was born in Kolb, in the lower Volga region of Russia. Christine married John P. Kister in 1875. They may have had as many as fourteen children, eight surviving to adulthood. The family eventually farmed property south of Eby school, in Clackamas county, Oregon.

Widowed in 1893, Christine remarried to "Bill" Gortler 9 Dec 1897. The couple produced no more children.
