US Congressman. The fourth Hamilton Fish in Congress, he graduated from Connecticut's Kent School in 1944 and served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, 1944 to 1946. He graduated from Harvard University in 1949 and joined the Foreign Service, serving as Vice Consul in Ireland from 1951 to 1953. He graduated from New York University Law School in 1957. Fish was active in Republican campaigns and in 1961 he was Counsel to the New York Assembly's Judiciary Committee. After losing a 1964 race, in 1968 he was elected to the US House and served 13 terms, 1969 to 1995. He was the Judiciary Committee's ranking Republican beginning in 1983, voted to impeach Richard Nixon, and was a House manager for the impeachment of Judges Harry Claiborne and Alcee Hastings. He helped pass the 1979 and 1992 Fair Housing Acts, the 1982 Voting Rights Act extension, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the 1990 Civil Rights Act, and he was the Republican co-sponsor of the 1991 Civil Rights Act. He retired because of a recurrence of prostate cancer, which spread to his lungs, and he died at his home in Washington.
