Charles E. Phillips, Texas cowboy and cattleman, passed from this life on Monday, March 12, 2012 at age 88.

He was born in Hamilton, Texas on April 11, 1923 to Emmett Russell Phillips and Allie Estelle (Combs) Phillips. He was one of eight children born to that union.

Raised in and around Llano County, Charlie was exposed to farming and ranching at an early age. He took to it as a natural. He attended schools in Valley Spring and graduated from Cherokee High School. While in school he made many lifelong friends who he thought and spoke of often.

He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.) as a young man and was part of many of their projects, three of which were the Rocky Mountain National Park and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and The Longhorn Cavern State Park in central Texas.

After December 7th, 1941 he answered the call of his country to serve her proudly in the United States Navy during War World II and was stationed to a seaplane tender, the U.S.S. Pocomoke, in the Pacific Theater of Operations. While aboard ship he served as a Medic in the ship's hospital. His ship was involved in numerous major actions during his service.

Upon his return home, he returned to cowboying. He was involved with the Barnes Ranch at Lake Buchanan and the Hicks Ranch of Gillespie County.

He met his wife, Margie Dawn Bode, on a trip to the San Angelo Steer Roping and like they say, "The rest is history." They would have celebrated their sixtieth anniversary this coming August 31, 2012.

In the late fifties, the cattle business was not good for a young man with a growing family so he headed to the big city of San Antonio to provide for them. He found work with Quincy Lee Builders for a while and eventually was hired by Texas Employment Commission (now Texas Workforce Commission). He worked for them until 1978 when he retired and returned to Llano County.

After returning to Llano he was asked by W.Y.Fowler, III, to be foreman of his ranch. The offer was accepted and he enjoyed many years managing that ranch. Local rancher Jim Renick also contacted Charlie about helping and a long friendship developed that they both fully enjoyed. The years after his retirement were probably some of the most joyful of his life.

Recently Charlie and Margie had moved to Boerne, Texas to be closer to his children. It was here that his final illness overtook him. Charlie was a member of the Valley Spring United Methodist Church.

Charlie was predeceased by six brothers and sisters, Sam, Grace, Estelle, Polly, Ollie, and Raymond.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife Margie and two sons, Emmett Bruce and his wife Linda and Gordon Matthew, all of Boerne, Texas. He is also survived by the apple of his eye, his granddaughter Lezley Dawn Webb and her husband Chris, and their children, his great-grandchildren, Elise, Kimber, Kinsley, and Elijah.

He is also survived by one brother, Bill, of Hearne, Texas

Also surviving are numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Waldrope Hatfield Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Vicky Troy officiating, burial to follow at the Valley Spring Cemetery.
