Born in Remlingen, Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany. He came to America in Oct 1856 with his parents locating in Edwardsville IL.
After several apprenticeships, Madison Advertiser, Free Press, A. Weibuch & Son, in St Louis, he went to Alton, where he worked in both the Telegraph and Democrat offices.
Thence he went to Highland in the fall of 1865, where he took charge of the Union Newpaper office as foreman. In December of the same year he purchased the Union office in connection with Dr. G. Rutz. On Mar 18, 1874 the Union newspaper passed into his exclusive ownership, buying out his partner, Dr. Gallus Rutz.
He died at the home of his daughter in Chicago, with whom he had been living with the past decade.
