Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of John and Elizabeth (Walther) Nydegger. He graduated from Johnson & Wales University and resided in North Kingstown, R.I., for 47 years before moving to Strafford seven years ago.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served in World War II. After one enlistment he left only to re-enlist a few years later to start his career in the Navy. He retired in 1966, and began working in civil service in an overhaul and repair facility and then for the State of Rhode Island.
Walter was a member of St. Frances DeSales Church in North Kingstown, R.I., and St. Joseph's Church in Northwood.
His wife of 53 years, Rhoda L. (Sumption) died in 2008. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Claire, Marguerite, Charles and Richard, his cousin Richard, and by his daughter-in-law, Bernadette.
Survivors include his son, Walter R. Nydegger Jr. and his wife Jeanne Brown of Newmarket; three grandchildren, Jaye Nydegger, Hannah Nydegger and Katie Brown; several nieces and nephews.
