James "Jim" Gerdes, 81, of Miller, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with the Rev. David Andrews officiating. Burial will be in the GAR Cemetery at Miller. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the Reck Funeral Home in Miller, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

Jim Gerdes was born May 27, 1922, at St. Lawrence, to John and Flossie (Milsap) Gerdes. He moved with his family as a child to a farm 3 and a half miles south of Miller. He grew up and attended school in Miller, graduating in 1940. He attended South Dakota State University for three semesters in 1941-1942.

He married Aileen Roalstad Jan. 7, 1944, at Miller. He was a Dekalb seed corn dealer for many years and farmed on the family farm. In 1991, they retired from farming, and moved into Miller in 1998.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Miller, St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge, and the Farmers Union. He served on the Miller Township Board, Rural Electric Association Board, and served as president of the Hand County Farmers Union. He also flew airplanes and crop dusted for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Aileen, of Miller; a son, Roger (Marcia) Gerdes of Miller; three daughters, Suzy (Larry) Blaseg of Miller, Sandra (Harvey) Ramirez of Sioux Falls, and Sheryl Bedard of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Phinney of Miller, and Maxine Wylie of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl.
