GARRISON - Dolores Staehr, 89, Garrison, died March 24, 2009, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison. Burial will be in the spring at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Garrison. Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at the church.
Dolores was born June 1, 1919, in Hankinson, to Raymond and Mary (Retterath) Peterschick. She was raised and educated in rural Douglas in the schoolhouse that is now in Heritage Park in Garrison. She then attended one year at St. Nicholas Catholic School in Garrison before transferring to Douglas High School, where she graduated in 1938. She then took teaching tests at Minot State and went to work teaching at Roseglen. In 1941, she went to Montana to teach and also received her teaching certificate in Great Falls, Mont. Dolores spent several years teaching in many parts of Montana, all of which were experiences that remained with her for the rest of her life.
On Feb. 2, 1943, she married Robert Staehr in San Francisco. The family then moved back to their home area in rural Douglas to farm. They farmed for over 27 years and raised their five sons, Clifford, Kenneth, Warren, Richard and Bryon. Bob died on May 8, 1970. Dolores and her boys continued farming for a few years before her son, Clifford, and his wife, Marian, took over the operation. Dolores then moved into Garrison where she worked at the Garrison City Library, did survey work and worked at various other jobs.
Dolores was very active with St. Nicholas Catholic Church and St. Ann's Altar Society in Garrison. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Heritage Park Foundation, Fort Stevenson Foundation and McLean County and North Dakota State Historical Foundations. She also enjoyed genealogy work and being involved with the Garrison Senior Citizens.
Dolores is survived by her sons, Kenneth Staehr, Austin, Texas, Warren (Brenda) Staehr, Austin, Texas, Richard (Lori) Staehr, Bismarck, and Bryon Staehr, Manchaca,Texas; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hamblen, Jason Staehr, Philip Staehr and Jared Staehr; and one brother, Elroy Peterschick.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Clifford; and two sisters, Katherine Jamtgaard and Ceceila Skadson.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Heritage Park Foundation or the Fort Stevenson Foundation both of Garrison.
