Caroline Keil Strecker's story:
The family moved to Russell (Kansas), lived there a short time and moved to the Frank Shelton farm. Later they pruchased the farm, which is still in the family. The big rock barn is a landmark north of Galatia. This barn proved the strong agricultural influence these pion eers brought with them to have protection for their animals and storage for the grain and crops during the long hard winters. I remember my grandparents real well, as I was raised with them. They were very dear to me. It was customary to live with the parents and to take care o f them, especially for the oldest son. My parents lived with the grandparents for several years. We all lived together, a happy family. There was Uncle Emanuel Keil, Aunts Beatrice and Amelia Keil. My aunts and uncle seemed more like sisters and brother to me. We lived there until the grandparents sold the homestead and moved to Russell.

After another year, we moved to Barton County, to the Frank Shelton farm. We rented for several years, and later my father bought the place. My father was a gifted man in many ways. Years ago, nobody received schooling, but they educated themselves. He taught himself penmanship and figures. There wasn't anything he couldn't figure in arithmetic and lumber. In 1927 my folks moved to Galatia where he was manager of the Wolf Milling Company elevator. He stayed there for 17 years. When his health failed, he retired.
