GUS BAUER, OF CRYSTAL, DIES AT THE AGE OF 77
Resident of Central Tama County Nearly Half a Century—Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Gus Bauer, a resident of Crystal township nearly half a century, passed away Monday at the A. J. Ploen home, where he had made his home since the death of his daughter. He was born November 26, 1858, in Salsau, Holstein, Germany. He came to America in November 1884, accompanied by his parents. The following spring, he moved to the Peter Muirhead farm, where he lived for three years, then to the Munson farm. There he was married September 30, 1897, to Anna M. Lietz. To this union three children were born: Linda K., now deceased; Frank H., near Toledo, Minnie C. Bauer, of Traer.
In the spring of 1905, he came to Crystal township, where his wife passed away on May 25. He is survived by two children, Frank, Toledo, and Minnie, Traer; two granddaughters; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gus Schade, of Crystal; and an aged sister living in Germany.
The funeral was held at the Ploen residence at 2 p. m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. John Dunkel, former Tranquillity-Salem pastor, now a resident of Indiana. Pall bearers were B. E. Martin, Tom Martin, Herb Mason, W. W. Balfout, K. S. Muirhead and Hazen Smith. Mrs. Herbert Mason, Mrs. Harold Cooper, Carroll Westfall and Burlen Johnson sang “Beautiful Isle of Some W here,” “Nearer My God to Thee" and “The Old Rugged Cross.’’ The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Carroll Westfall and Mrs. Elizabeth Wylie. Burial was at Pleasant Hill cemetery.
