Confederate Army Officer. A nephew of President Zachary Taylor, he attended West Point from 1845 to 1848, but left before graduating. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1855 and served in the 8th Infantry until 1861, when he entered the Confederate Army as a Major in the First Battalion Infantry in Mississippi. He became a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Mississippi Battalion in 1861, and served until he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Frayser's Farm. His cousin, Sarah Knox Taylor was the first wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
