Susan Anna Gibbons (Dittmar), 90, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Evergreen Commons, East Greenbush, after a short illness. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on July 29, 1917 to Wilhelm and Anna Dittmar, Sue graduated from high school with high honors and first worked as a secretary in NYC. In 1942, she enlisted as part of the first group of women in the "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service" (W.A.V.E.S.) rising to the rank of Yeoman 2nd class. While stationed in Washington D.C., she met and married another Yeoman, Vincent Gibbons of Salem, Mass. After the family moved from New York City to Castleton, Sue re-entered the work force as secretary to the principal of the Castleton Elementary School and later worked at the Parks and Recreation Department for the State of N.Y. Vince and Sue retired to Largo, Fla., in 1985 where her beloved husband died in 1999. Sue returned to Upstate New York in 2003. Sue was a charter member of the Castleton Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Castleton VFW Post 7337. She and Vinny enjoyed many ocean cruises together. Susan was predeceased by her loving sisters, Thelma Gorman and Martha King. Susan leaves behind two loving sons, James Vincent of Castleton, N.Y. and Dennis Kevin (wife, Elinore) of Redding, Conn. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Thomas Kevin Gibbons of Castleton and Kerry Aurand Hunter (husband, Antonio) of Jacksonville, N.C. In her final years, Sue took great joy in her great-granddaughter, Kassidy Page Hunter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Castleton on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in the spring in the New Sacred Heart Cemetery in Castleton. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution, in Susan's name, to Community Hospice of Rensselaer Co., 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, N.Y. or Evergreen Commons, 1070 Luther Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061.
