Claus V. E. Rahlf, 51, of 207 East Fairchild St., Iowa City, died suddenly at 6:40 a.m., this morning after suffering a stroke in his home while preparing to leave for his work.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday at Beckman's Funeral Home, Iowa City, and at 2:00 p.m., at the Durant Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Durant Cemetery, Durant, Iowa.

Claus Vester Emil Rahlf was born April 17, 1885 in Burg, Fehmarn, an island off the northern coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Hans and Caroline (Hermann) Rahlf. Along with his brother Hans Rahlf, they sailed aboard the ship Blucher, arriving in New York on April 14, 1904 and settled in Durant, Iowa. He married Mathilda Margaretha Hermann on October 9, 1907 in Davenport, Iowa.

He learned his trade of a butcher while in Germany and was employed as a butcher in Durant, until moving to Iowa City 15 years ago, where he continued his trade as a butcher.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Edna and Esther Rahlf, both at home; his mother, Caroline Rahlf; and two brothers, Carl and Hans Rahlf, all in Germany.

He was preceded in death by his father, two infant children, two sisters, and one brother.
