In the records of the Ev. Lutheran Synod of Illinois (1858), Pastor D.J. Warns is listed as serving a congregation at Nauvoo, IL, having been recieved by transfer earlier in that year from the Synod of Northern Illinois.
The "Christian Cyclopedia" notes that in 1862, he was pastoring at Bethalto, IL, and helped to found the short-lived "Lutheran Concordia Synod the West" with pastors L.F.E. Krause (of Winona, MN) and C.F. Jungk (of New Oregon, IA).
He is listed in the history of Dubois County, IN, as pastoring St Jacobi Lutheran Church Holland, IN, from 1865 to 1878.
He eventually homesteaded with his family in Wentworth, Dakokta Territory.
