Sarah Birch was born the daughter of Joseph and Jane (Hammond) Birch. Her first husband was Herbert Wainwright, whom she married on September 16, 1849 in Canada. They had sons, George Wainwright in 1850 and Edward Wainwright in 1855. George was born in Canada, Edward was born in Michigan. Herbert died about 1857 in Michigan. On September 4, 1858 Sarah married Edward Cartwright. They had five children, Thomas Cartwright, Elizabeth, Mary, Emily and Sarah Cartwright.
