She was born arch 15, 1940, in Rocky Ford Colorado, the daughter of Wilma Luetta Burks. After the death of Joyce's mother while she was an infant, Joyce was raised by her grandparents, John and Marie Fancher Burks of Tusumbia. She attended the Pisgah grade school and Mt. Zion Christian Church.
In 1954 Joyce moved to Jefferson City to live with her uncle and aunt, Austin and Ora Burks. On February 25, 1955, Joyce was united in marriage to Carl A. Colter who survives of the home.
Joyce worked in central supply for Charles E. Still hospital and later Capital Region Medical Center from 1970 until her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed making quilts, gardening, and spending time at their cabin on Lake of the Ozarks, where she spent countless hours crappie fishing.
In addition to her husband Carl, Joyce is survived by three children, Diana Distler and husband Tom of Jefferson City, Dale Colter and wife Linda of Ashland, Scott Colter and wife Angela of New Bloomfield; a daughter in law Neena Colter, four grandchildren, Christopher Distler, Dustin Colter, Cody Colter, Ashley Colter; three step grandchildren, Missy Hatfield, Jessi Conyers, Christy Smedley, five step great grandchildren, and a sister in law Dorece Colter. She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Allen Colter in April 2001.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. Saturday April 14, 2012 at the Houser Millard Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will follow at 11;00 a.m Saturday in Riverview Cemetery with Pastor Ben Montgomery officiating.
