RAPID CITY - Nick Frank Hontol, 89, died Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Nick was born Nov. 4, 1922, at Quakertown, Pa., to Frank Nicholas and Ruth (Cristofa) Hontol.
He entered the United States Army Air Corps in January 1943 during World War II and served in the China-Burma-India Campaign.
He then entered the United States Air Force in March 1948 and served as a Staff Sergeant.
He retired from active duty with the Department of the Air Force with the HQ1 821 Combat Support GP SAC from Ellsworth Air Force Base on Jan. 1, 1965, with 21 years of military service to the United States.
He then attended Black Hills State College (now called Black Hills State University) in Spearfish from 1965-69 and graduated with his BSED degree.
He married Alfreda A. (Caspers) Cameron on Nov. 22, 1967, at Rapid City. He then attended the University of Nevada from 1973-74 and received his Master's Degree in Education.
He entered the field of education as a counselor and taught school at Ely, Nev., White Pine County, Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City School system, Douglas High School and finally Pine Ridge High School, where he retired.
He also was an Assistant Field Director for the American Red Cross Headquarters U.S. 5th Army of Chicago. His wife, Alfreda, died July 13, 2009, and Nick continued to live in Rapid City.
Nick was a member of the St. John the Theologian Orthodox Church, Elks Lodge 1187, TREA Chapter 29, American Legion Post 22, and Rushmore VFW Post 1273.
He is survived by his 2 nieces,4 stepchildren and a very special friend, G.M.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann (Hontol) Sons; stepmother, Evelyn Hontol; and his wife, Alfeda.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd., with the Trisagion Prayers of Mercy for the Departed During Bright Week at 6 p.m. recited by Fr. Thomas Williams.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, at St. John the Theologian Orthodox Church, 601 Flormann St., with Fr. Thomas Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard.
