Robert W. Betz, June 29, 1932 ~ November 26, 2011

Well known, respected Longmont athlete and coach Robert W. Betz of Longmont died November 26, 2011 at Life Care of Longmont. He was 79.

Bob was born on June 29, 1932 in the mining camp of Canfield, Colorado to William Betz and Anna Giebelhaus. The family moved to Longmont a few years later where he spent his formative years.

Bob was active in sports his entire life. He graduated from Longmont High School in 1950. During that time he earned 11 athletic letters, tying a LHS record. He lettered in each sport; football, basketball, baseball, golf and tennis. He was named to the All-State team in basketball. Following high school, he attended Colorado State University, where he lettered four years on the basketball team. In 1954, his senior year, as Captain, he led the Aggies to the NCAA tournament.

He married Marilyn Price on May 1, 1952 in Raton, New Mexico.

Bob began his teaching and coaching teaching career at Yuma High School, Yuma, Colorado. He took over a team in a town that hadn't ardently followed basketball. His first year coaching he took the Indians to the state tournament. He would win two state titles during his time coaching in Yuma. He then went on to Jefferson High in Jefferson County, Colorado for a year, before his dream job opened up in his hometown at Longmont High School. He would teach and coach at Longmont from 1968-1988. Over his 20 year career at LHS, he took a few teams to the state tournament, a difficult task in the day only to lose to the eventual state champions. His teams made many trips to the regional finals and won a number of Northern Conference titles. He was named coach of the year in basketball on two different occasions. He compiled a record of 367-184. In addition, he coached tennis a couple of years and the golf program for many years. He never won a state championship in golf, but had numerous Top Ten performances.

Bob played competitive fast-pitch softball, attending several World Tournaments in the 1960's with local powerhouse, Colorado Stone. He played competitive golf with local men's clubs at both Sunset and Twin Peaks and many invitational tournaments in northern Colorado. Bob possessed a great sense of humor and quick wit.

Surviving are his wife of Longmont; two sons; and a sister of Longmont.

A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 2 at Rocky Mountain Christian Church.

Contributions may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 E Easter Ln, Centennial, CO 80112
