Arthur James Carter, 72, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 20th, surrounded by his wife and family at St. Catherine's Medical Center after a long illness. Born March 8, 1939, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Art was the son of the late Henry and Ellen (Van Ryzin) Carter. He was educated in Green Bay schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958 after graduation. Following his discharge in 1960, he began a 33-year career working for the Chicago & North Western Railroad, initially as a switchman then a breakman. He also served in the Army Reserve. He married Geri Stankevitz in Green Bay on March 10, 1962. They had one daughter. After his first marriage ended, he wed Arleen Titel on April 15, 1972, in Green Bay, and assumed the role of father to her six children. After Arlene's death in 1990, he moved to Kenosha and continued working for the railroad as a conductor on Metra's Union Pacific/North line. On this train he met Shirley Czerniec, whom he married on July 1, 1991, in Crown Point, Ind., becoming stepfather to Shirley's five children. Art was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and cribbage player, and was active in the Knight Riders Snowmobile Club of Green Bay. Always fascinated by small things and someone who listened more than he spoke, he will be sadly missed. He was a genuine type of person you couldn't help but like - a gentle, patient man of extraordinary perseverance. Those who knew Art watched him battle one health problem after another over the last eighteen years, yet he seldom complained.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arleen (1990), his brother-in-law Jim

Reinhard (2006), and his brother-in-law John Daniels of Oswego, Ill. (April 2011).

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Carter; two sisters, Mary Reinhard of Green Bay and Connie Hendershott of Rockford, Ill.; his daughter, Tina (Daniel) McGrew of North Carolina; eleven stepchildren, Mike (Ann) Titel, Jo (Pat) Watt, Rob Titel, Patti (Tom) Schlief, and Barb Townsend, all of Green Bay; John (Margie) Titel, Boulder Junction; Mark (Amy) Czerniec, Racine; Maria (Wayne) Fisher, Ohio; Colette Czerniec, Paris, Wis.; Karen (Kevin) Fleming, Paddock Lake; Lori Czerniec, Kenosha; five nieces, two nephews, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Our family is forever grateful to Dr. Neil Shepler for the great care he provided Art over the years and for being with us right to the very end. We are also grateful to the tentative staffs of both St. Catherine's Medical Center and Kenosha Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 27th at Proko Funeral Home at 12 noon. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Next Step (Young People with Cancer), a charity endorsed by Father Dominic Roscioli, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
