Josef Matthäus Keller was born on October 6, 1809, in Amorbach, a small town in what is now Bavaria, Germany. Josef Matthäus Keller was baptized at St. Gangolf's Church in the Parish of Amorbach. He was the eldest surviving son of Joseph Anton Keller, who was born on 24 November 1776 in Amorbach, and died 25 March 1835, also in Amorbach, and Anna Barbara Keller neé Brohm, who was born on 7 May 1786 in Amorbach, Bavaria, and died 9 December 1868 in Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.

Joseph Matthias Keller's father's family in Amorbach, Germany, were all hat makers. For at least 4 generations back, his father, grandfather, great grandfather and 2 greats grandfather, the church records list their occupation as hat maker. His mother's father, Martin Brohm, was a linen weaver.

Joseph Matthias Keller immigrated to the United States of America sometime between 1830-1835, and he settled in Baltimore, Maryland. He found work as a summer hat maker, and (I'm guessing) sent money so his mother, brothers and sisters could also travel to Baltimore. Three of his siblings were married in Baltimore.

On May 22, 1836, Joseph Matthias Keller married Eva Barbara Orth in Saint John's German Catholic Church, Baltimore. Joseph and Barbara Keller had at least 10 children. Five children probably survived to adulthood. Three children have a Memorial listed below.

1) Mary Barbara Keller 1837 - no marriage or death found yet.

7) Peter Alphonsus Keller, who was born on 7 June 1849 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. Peter also likely died before 1850, as he isn’t listed on his parent’s 1850 Census.

8) Anna Catharina Elisabetha Keller was born on 3 August 1851, and baptized on 5 August 1851, at St. Alphonsus’ Church, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. Anna Catharina Elisabetha Keller probably died before 1855.

9) Barbara Josepha Keller 1853-1859. See Memorial.

10) Anna Catharina Keller, born 1 Jan 1855, legitimate daughter of Jos. Matheus Keller of Amorbach in Bavaria, and Barbara Orth of Amorbach in Bavaria, was baptized on 6 January 1855 by the Rev. Krenzer, at St. Alphonsus’ Church, Baltimore. Sponsor: Anna Catharine Reisner. Anna Catharina Keller is not on the 1860 Census.

Joseph Matthias Keller is first listed in the 1838 Baltimore City Directories as Joseph Keller, summer hat maker, and in 1849, as a rattan and basket maker. But, by 1850, Joseph M. Keller is a tavern keeper, and/or a brewer of beer.

In 1840, Joseph Matthias Keller was one the founders of the German Catholic Beneficial Society, and later, he helped to found the Baltimore Building Society of St. Joseph in 1849.

Some time in the early 1850s, his first wife, Barbara Keller, passed away.

On November 24, 1856, Joseph Matthias Keller married Mary Ursula Krauss, at St. Alphonsus' Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore. Joseph and Ursula Keller do not appear to have had any children.

In the 1860s, Joseph Matthias Keller continued to brew and sell beer. Then, in 1872, he switched back to his old occupation of making baskets, and continued to make and sell them until 1885.

Joseph M. Keller, died on May 13, 1885, in his 76th year. He died from kidney disease and heart failure. The funeral for Joseph Matthias Keller was from his late address, at 141 North Chappel Street. Interment in St. Alphonsus Cemetery on May 15, 1885.

On his death certificate it says that Joseph Matthias Keller was buried in Saint Alphonsus Cemetery in Baltimore. Saint Alphonsus Cemetery records are located at the Redemptorist Cemeteries Office at # 410-284-0648. Staff there said they only have St. Alphonsus' records from 1845 to 1879, and do not know where or if the later records can be found. (Barbara Keller, who probably died around 1854, was not listed in these records.)
