Born 29 July 1925 in rural Morrison County, MN; Richard was the second of eight children born to John Thomas & Helen Teresa (Schichta) Kulla.

In November 1943, Richard enlisted in the US Navy. After Boot Camp, he received additional training at the Amphibious Training Base (ATB) at Camp Bradford in Norfolk, VA.

Richard was a "plankowner" (i.e., part of the initial commissioning crew) of USS LST 681 on 1 July 1944. He served on her for the rest of the war -- USS LST-681 earned three battle stars for World War II service.

Richard was promoted to Seaman First Class on 1 May 1945 and on 1 June 1946 he was transferred to the Receiving Station at Mare Island (CA) for further transfer back to Minneapolis for discharge.

On 18 June 1949, Richard first married Joyce Marie Fussy in Hennepin County, MN; she was age 20, he was 23. Born in Two Rivers (Township) in rural Morrison County, MN; Joyce was the younger of two children born to Thomas Michael & Anna E. (Yorek) Fussy.

They ultimately divorced, but had six children.
