Leo Benson Miles, 91 was reunited with his sweetheart on May 3, 2012. He died in his home in Salt Lake City, UT surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 2, 1921, in Ioka, UT to Ralph Maxwell and Eva May Benson Miles. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, working as an aircraft mechanic. After the war, he married "his little girl" Beverley Jean Openshaw on March 28, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings in the Pioneer stake, including Bishop's counselor (twice), and ward and stake clerk. In his later years he indexed nearly 35,000 names for the family history program. He worked for the Utah State Tax Commission for over 30 years. During that time he was an auditor and advanced to chief auditor in the tax commission.
Dad was an avid fisherman and loved to teach his children and grandchildren the sport. They have many fond memories of fishing with Grandpa. His kids knew he could fix anything and he was always willing to help his family. He stayed active, both mentally and physically, to the very end. He enjoyed his daily Sudoku and crossword puzzles and read a novel or two every week. He loved playing card games with his family and was happy whether he won or lost. He had a great sense of humor and had a repertoire of snappy one-liners everyone loved. Family dinners won't be the same without him.
Dad is survived by his three children, Jennifer (David) Haygood, Scott (Chris) Miles, and Cindy (Tracy) Branch, his two brothers, Joe and Glenn Miles, and his 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverley, his parents, his brothers Paul, Harold, and Rey Miles and his sister, Ora Simons.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 7, 2012, at 12:00 Noon at the Canyon Rim 1st Ward building, 3000 South Grace Street (3100 East), Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 6, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland drive, Salt Lake City, Utah and from 10:30 - 11:30 am on May 7, at the Canyon Rim 1st Ward. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
