Mary Ellen (Johnston) Walter, 85 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Emerald Court in Scottsbluff.
Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery. At her request, she was cremated. Mary Ellen was born on November 9, 1926 in Bridgeport, Nebraska to Leo S. and Lila (Norris) Johnston. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Henry Walter on July 3, 1947 in Mitchell, Nebraska and made their home in western Nebraska until settling in Gering. She was a member of the Gering Baptist Church and the TOPS group. She worked at CO-OP for several years in the meat department and as a checker until she retired. Survivors include her children: Margaret (Jerry) Hitchings of Rye, Texas, Marjorie (Dotz) Wilhelm of Gering, Marietta Graves of Gering and Tom (Barbara) Walter of Fredericksburg, Texas; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; sister Barbara (Keith) Rice of Colorado Springs, CO; brothers Clifford (Connie) Johnston of Cheyenne, WY and Duane (Lori) Johnston of Modesto, CA; sister-in-law Joyce Johnston of Scottsbluff and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Steve Wilhelm, granddaughter Mary Geneva Hitchings; brothers Bob (Erma) Johnston and Leo Johnston; sisters Betty Metz and Hannah Johnston and friend Curly Krawjewski.
