"DEATH OF JOHN STEWART
----
Yesterday all that was mortal of one of the oldest citizens of New Orleans was laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery -- Mr. John Stewart, who died at his home, No. 222 Dorgenols street, Tuesday evening, having reached the extreme old age of 95. Mr. Stewart, in former years a very active man, has for several years been confined to his room, age having laid a heavy hand upon him. Though very old, he retained his vitality up to a few years ago, since which time he has been unable to actively discharge his business duties.

Mr. Stewart was a native of Londonderry, Ireland, and came to this country fifty years ago. He has made New Orleans his home since that time, and was an honored and respected citizen. For the past thirty years he has been a member of the Canal Street Presbyterian church. Up to a few years ago he was an active officer of that church, and when he could no longer attend he practiced within the home circle those virtues of a Christian life which induced and were fostered in his church relationship.

Mr. Stewart was perhaps one of the few men who recalled the battle of Waterloo. H was oftentimes known before his death to speak of the return of the soldiery from this famous battle and related how that memorable victory was celebrated throughout England. Rev. Dr. Nall preached the funeral service at the cemetery."
